Profile Information

About Me
Nicholas Cantrell is a full-time graduate student at Texas A&M University enrolled in the Master’s in International Affairs program. His focus is national security, intelligence, defense policy & military affairs, and European studies; Nicholas will graduate in December 2012. He is also currently a Captain serving in the United States Army Reserves.

Nicholas graduated from Texas A&M University in 2003 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and a minor in business. Upon graduation, he served on active duty from 2004-2010 in the United States Army as an artillery officer. His assignments included 5 years in Germany with one 14-month deployment to Iraq, and one year at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While deployed, Nicholas served as the officer in charge of kinetic and non-kinetic effects for an infantry battalion assigned to Sadr City, Iraq. He was responsible for reconstruction efforts in excess of $55 million USD, with projects ranging from schools to sewage and water treatment plants to hospitals. He also developed a local neighborhood guard program that increased the safety of its residents and employed over 2000 local citizens. Nicholas’ service overseas and deployed is what sparked his interest in national security and international affairs, and his pursuit of a Master’s degree. He would like to continue his public service within the intelligence community, policy research institutions, or within other national security federal agencies.

Nicholas was recently selected to attend and participate in the Afghanistan Student Conference in Bonn, Germany in December 2011, was recently selected as a Next Generation Project Texas Fellow, and is also a member of the Young Professionals in Foreign Policy. He is married to Dr. Emily (Binks) Cantrell, a visiting assistant professor in the College of Education at Texas A&M University and they live in Bryan, Texas with their 12-year-old Golden Retriever, Tucker.
